The danger of a single story

Power is the ability not just to tell the story of another person, but to make it the definitive story of that person.” – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

In light of the recent negative rhetoric depicted in the public sphere, I can’t help but to think of “the danger of a single story” and how it can create stereotypes, rob people of their dignity, and spread hatred and division. In the face of of these repeatedly told single stories, let’s be mindful of the fact that there is never a ‘single story’ about any place or group of people. Let’s be kind to one another.

This TED video by the novelist and the brilliant Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is worth watching a thousand times.
